RULES OF RIDING ESCOOTERS IN ENGLAND

Private electric scooters are not allowed on the road

The current use of electric scooters in the UK is still in the trial phase. According to the UK government's website, the rules governing the use of electric scooters apply only to rental parts used as tests (i.e. shared electric scooters). Privately owned electric scooters can only be used on private land that is inaccessible to the public and must be approved by landowners or owners, otherwise it is illegal.

In other words, private electric scooters are not allowed on public roads above and can only be used in their own yard or in private places. Only rented electric scooters are available on public roads.

Penalties that can be faced if an electric scooter is used illegally include a fine, a driver's license deduction, and the seizure of an electric scooter.

Do you want a driver's license on an electric scooter?

This rule may surprise many people, yes, you can't use it if you don't have a driver's license.

There are many types of driver's licenses, which one is suitable for electric scooters? Your driver's license must be one of the AM, A, B, Q (or temporary UK licensed driver's license includes Class Q rights) in order to use an electric scooter. In other words, you must have at least a motorcycle driver's license before you can use an electric scooter.

If you have an overseas driver's license, you can use an electric scooter if:

Have a valid full driver's license from an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) country (as long as you are not prohibited from driving a low-speed moped or motorcycle)

A valid full driver's licence from another country allows you to drive a small vehicle (e.g. a car, moped or motorcycle) and you have entered the UK within the last 12 months

If you have lived in the UK for more than 12 months and you wish to continue driving in the UK, you must change your driver's licence.

Electric scooters cannot be used if you have an overseas temporary permit to drive, a learning driving permit or equivalent.

Do you need to insure it?

Electric scooters must have car insurance, which is handled and paid by the lessor (i.e. the motor scooter rental operator), and the user who pays the rent (i.e. the lessee) does not need to consider this matter.

This applies only to rental sections and does not temporarily cover private electric scooters.

What are the dress codes?

Bicycle helmets are recommended when using electric scooters, but are not required by law. Make sure your bike helmet is compliant, of the correct size and secured.

Wear light or fluorescent clothing so that other road users can see you during the day, in low light, and in the dark.

Where can I use the electric scooter I tried?

You can use electric scooters on roads (except highways) and bike paths, not on sidewalks.

Where bicycle traffic signs are used, electric scooters can be used (except for signs that prohibit electric scooters from entering specific bike lanes).

Do I need license plates and vehicle excise taxes?

Electric scooters do not require registration, license plate display or vehicle excise tax.

What are the other safety rules for electric scooters trial users?

The maximum speed of an electric scooter is 15.5 mph (about 25 km/h)

Electric scooters can only be used in the area of the relevant test

Electric scooters can only be used by one person at a time

You can't use an electric scooter to tow anything

Do not use your mobile phone when using an electric scooter

Navigation information can be displayed using the screen, but must be set up before departure

Make sure that the bags or other small items you carry do not pose a danger to you or others around you and that they do not hang on the trolley.

You may not use an electric scooter after drinking, or you may face legal action.
